The Canadian Municipal Barometer
The Canadian Municipal Barometer (CMB) is a broad research partnership, bringing together several academic and non-academic institutions across Canada, whose objective is to understand and improve municipal democracy. Supported by a partnership grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (2024-2031), the Canadian Municipal Barometer brings together seven universities, seven practice organizations, and researchers from twenty different universities. The partnership aims to conduct research on municipal democracy and representation in four specific research areas: representation and diversity, elections and voting, multi-level governance, and public policy. This research will include annual surveys of mayors and municipal councillors from 1,000 municipalities, large-scale surveys of the Canadian public, and in-depth qualitative research. In addition to scientific work, the partnership will also produce numerous results for practitioners and the general public, notably through the Local Democracy Laboratory (LDL).
