Local Democracy Lab

The Local Democracy Lab is designed to serve as a single point of contact for municipal representatives, municipal governments, community leaders, community organizations, and local journalists to partner with the Canadian Municipal Barometer to collect and analyze data on municipal democracy and representation in Canada. Need customized data? Write to us: cmb@ucalgary.ca

How can the Local Democracy Lab assist your work? To provide some ideas, here are examples of questions we’ve been able to help local organizations, media organizations, and municipal leaders answer in the past:

  • What do municipal elected representatives across Canada think about the role of political parties in municipal politics?
  • How many municipal mayors and councillors across Canada are under the age of 35? Are these younger councillors especially satisfied (or dissatisfied) with life on council?
  • We want to explore the effectiveness of our local civic education program. What’s the best way to do that, so that we can make a rigorous scientific report on the effectiveness of our program?
  • What do residents in my municipality think about the issues of climate change / housing affordability / police spending / etc.?
  • What proportion of local mayors and councillors in Canada are women?
